How to Say I Love You in Thai (And So Much More)
Learn how to say I love you in Thai — from the formal ฉันรักคุณ to the everyday expressions Thai couples actually use, plus the cultural context that makes Thai romance unique.
Every language has its own vocabulary for love. Thai is no different — but the way Thais express affection differs significantly from Western cultures. That makes learning it extra rewarding: you're not just learning words, you're learning a different perspective on intimacy.
The Basic Expression: ฉันรักคุณ
The Thai equivalent of 'I love you' is ฉันรักคุณ (chǎn rák khun). It's a complete, grammatically correct sentence — but you hear it less often than you might expect.

chǎn rák khun
I love you
Men can also say ผมรักคุณ (phǒm rák khun). In informal couple speech, khun (คุณ) is often replaced with thooe (เธอ) — it sounds warmer and more intimate.
Levels of Affection in Thai
Thai has more gradations of intimacy than most Western languages:
Cultural Context: How Thais Express Love
Thais say 'I love you' far less readily than people in Western cultures. Affection is expressed more through actions — buying food, caring, being present — than through words. คิดถึง (I'm thinking of you / I miss you) is in practice often a deeper expression of feeling than a direct ฉันรักคุณ.
Romantic Phrases for Daily Use
คิดถึง (khít-thʉ̌ng): "Thinking of you" / "I miss you" — widely used between couples over chat.
อยู่ด้วยกันนะ (yùu dûai-gan ná): "Let's be together" — a gentle way to propose a relationship.
ฉันชอบเธอมาก (chǎn chɔ̂ɔp thooe mâak): "I really like you" — safer than rák, less intense.
รักเธอ (rák thooe): "I love you" — informal, used between established couples.
