Thai Numbers Above 100: Thousands, Millions and Baht

You know Thai numbers 1-100 — now go further. Learn how hundreds, thousands, and millions work in Thai, plus how to understand prices in baht and the Buddhist calendar year.

You already know Thai numbers 1-100 — now let's go further. The logic of the Thai number system is consistent and predictable: once you know the key words for hundred, thousand, and million, you can express any number. And that's essential in a country where prices quickly reach into the thousands of baht.

ร้อย rɔ́ɔi hundred (100) ↑ high
พัน phan thousand (1,000) → mid
หมื่น mʉ̀ʉn ten thousand (10,000) ↓ low
แสน sǎɛn hundred thousand (100,000) ↗ rising
ล้าน láan million (1,000,000) ↘ falling
บาท bàat baht (Thai currency) ↓ low

Forming Compound Numbers

Thai numbers are built like English: large to small. Some examples:

  • 200: สองร้อย (sɔ̌ɔng rɔ́ɔi) — literally: "two hundred"

  • 1,500: หนึ่งพันห้าร้อย (nʉ̀ng phan hâa rɔ́ɔi) — "one thousand five hundred"

  • 2,500: สองพันห้าร้อย (sɔ̌ɔng phan hâa rɔ́ɔi) — "two thousand five hundred"

  • 10,000: หนึ่งหมื่น (nʉ̀ng mʉ̀ʉn) or simply หมื่น (mʉ̀ʉn)

  • 1,000,000: หนึ่งล้าน (nʉ̀ng láan) — "one million"

Understanding Prices in Thailand

The baht (บาท, bàat) is the Thai currency. A street meal costs 40-80 baht, a taxi ride 50-200 baht. But rent or a car quickly reaches tens of thousands or hundreds of thousands of baht. That's where หมื่น (mʉ̀ʉn = 10,000) and แสน (sǎɛn = 100,000) become essential.

Years in Thai: The Buddhist Calendar

Thailand uses the Buddhist calendar (พุทธศักราช, abbreviated พ.ศ.) which is 543 years ahead of the Gregorian calendar. The year 2026 in Thailand is พ.ศ. 2569. The year is read digit by digit: sɔ̌ɔng-phan-hâa-rɔ́ɔi-hòk-sìp-gâo. This explains why Thai official documents always show a higher number than you'd expect.

Tip

For everyday situations (shopping, taxis, restaurants), numbers 1-1,000 are more than enough. หมื่น (10,000) and แสน (100,000) only become necessary for larger purchases, rent, and official documents.
